week two: trial

WEEK TWO: TRIAL
Morning dawns bright and early the day after the announcement of the dead, and as the sun tracks its way across the sky, the voice's message is likely not far from anyone's mind. Friends are still missing, people are still dead, and time is running out.

Finally, the sun reaches its highest point. A low, deep thrumming sound echoes throughout the entire island, which turns into ringing, a drawn-out signal that grows louder and louder until it seems as though all other sounds on the island fall to a hush.

It is then that the lighthouse beacon becomes illuminated, drawing them all to the southern beach. That same voice as before rings, audible throughout the entire island.

"There are those of you who hope to escape from this with clean hands...you may find yourselves successful. Will it be worth it? You are all participants in this game, and you will all be complicit in the sacrifices that take place here, or else you will not have earned your passage home. Twenty-four hours remain before the ritual must be completed, or you will all suffer the consequences. There is no consolation prize for less than eleven sacrifices.

You have until the sun vanishes beneath the horizon. Choose your next sacrifice, and choose who will dispatch them. Speak the names of your choices into the conch. Failure to cooperate will result in a fate worse than death.

...perhaps you should investigate the deaths. The bodies are out there, and the evidence as well... but you will have to find it yourselves.

...oh, and one more thing. There is a way to save yourselves...if you select the right sacrifice.

Tick-tock, tick-tock! Your time starts... now."

Once the entire group has gathered, the lighthouse's beacon flickers out.

It is time to choose the next sacrifice... and hopefully, to catch a killer.

Good luck.

OOC NOTES
Welcome to your last trial, everyone! This trial will take place from 9am PST/12pm EST/4am NZST, and will last until 6pm PST/9pm EST/1pm NZST.

There will be a one-hour trial break from 1pm PST/4pm EST/8am NZST to 2pm PST/5pm EST/9am NZST. We recommend that you use this time to get something to eat if you haven't yet already, play some Animal Crossing, or even just take a quick nap. During this time, no mod tags will go out; we also ask that players refrain from starting any intensive threads such as interrogations, strip searches, hair or injury comparisons, etc. While we're not going to say you're not allowed to tag during this time, we also don't want anyone to miss out on anything important during an official break.

Please remember to have your character cast a vote on the voting page! Voting is mandatory, as it functions as the activity check for the game. If you do not cast a vote by the time trial is over, your character will be killed off. Please contact the mods prior to the end of the trial if something comes up and you are prevented from voting (i.e. 504 errors, etc).

If you have any questions, please go ahead and ask! Your mods and fellow players are always here to help. And most of all... have fun!

Hey, so did Dimitri and I. Ours led from the cliffs to the ruins. Maybe we should check out those places, too?

Now that you mention this... Kitagawa-san and I found a passage that led from the ruins to the camp by the jungle. I wonder if there's a deeper meaning to it.

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-09 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So many passages that connect to the ruins... it makes one think. There has to be a reason since the ruins weren't naturally made.
ahappyaccident: (I'm not crazy)

[personal profile] ahappyaccident 2020-05-09 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
There's definitely something off about that place. That's where they found the list of people we know, right? And the pictures?
wisterin: (a25)

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-09 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is. And yes, something is very not right. I found a hidden room full of a dozen skeletons in the ruins this week.

[ yaaaaay for more creepiness. haha! ]

[ terrible ]

Perhaps the ruins themselves are the ritual site, and the caverns are the means of getting sacrifices there...?

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-09 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
The skeletons and the state of the room they were in made it seem as if they were taking shelter from something, waiting something out.

[ Like a bunker almost. ]

I think the ruins were a central point, but it seems more like a lure than anything, if the notes found last week are to be trusted.

[ Happy customers or whatever the wording was for a deadly spa treatment. ]

Perhaps they were trying to wait out this game. An earlier round of people.

[ Just a guess, but what else could they be trying to escape...? ]

But the pictures and papers left there indicate there is another party at work. This voice we are hearing, the people who originally built and inhabited, the ones who dug the passageways—they could all be one in the same.

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-09 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
If they are one and the same, how old are they?

[ She's thinking. ]

If time works differently in those tunnels but only in those tunnels, how?
overruns: (11)

[personal profile] overruns 2020-05-09 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
The ruins look aged, but... If time passes strangely here, then it's difficult to say how old anything is. For all we know, people still live here and we cannot find them. [ It seems impossible to know anything for sure—the remains they've found are old and skeletal, but he had seen Dedue just before coming here. The whole island feels dilapidated, but they still received fresh supplies just this week. Nothing makes sense. ] Whatever the case, it's as though whoever we are facing operates on another timeline entirely.
wisterin: (a27)

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-09 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
On another timeline, is it?

[ She smiles. She can't disagree with that. ]

We all do seem to be from different times, as well. We may have to tuck that into the back of our minds for now. If we can't trust time, we must find something else to trust.
ahappyaccident: (what makes me dangerous)

[personal profile] ahappyaccident 2020-05-09 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, gross.

We just found a messed up massage room. It was hit by the fire last week, and there was a hole in the wall like someone broke through? But the weirdest part is that way less time passed than it should have taken us to get there, somehow.
lacking: (197)

[personal profile] lacking 2020-05-09 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It was the same for us. It felt like it took us way less time to get from the ruins to the camp, for some reason...
ahappyaccident: (brave and good)

[personal profile] ahappyaccident 2020-05-09 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, exactly. I don't know how, but it's like something in the tunnel, or maybe the ruins, has some sort of time warping effect. It doesn't make any sense... unless that's supposed to make it easier for someone to get away with murder, I guess.
overruns: (21)

[personal profile] overruns 2020-05-09 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It could explain how a killer could get around the island and commit multiple atrocities in one night. [ How they could get back to camp after, how they could get around... secret pathways like this could up the possibilities. ]
ahappyaccident: (I'm not crazy)

[personal profile] ahappyaccident 2020-05-09 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

[ she hates this! ]

Has anyone thought of making a map of the those tunnels? Having a visual might help us put it together.
overruns: (10)

[personal profile] overruns 2020-05-09 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's getting difficult to keep track of where they've been and where they're going; he nods. ]

That's a good idea. We can take stock of where everyone was last night as well.
lacking: (039)

[personal profile] lacking 2020-05-09 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Y-Yes... Or, maybe they're for whoever brought us here. If they're really one of us, it would be easier for them to move around undetected with convenient hidden passages like those.
ahappyaccident: (smarter than I look)

[personal profile] ahappyaccident 2020-05-09 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
...Do you really think they're one of us?
lacking: (141)

[personal profile] lacking 2020-05-09 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
... I don't want to think they are. But, I don't want to blind myself to the possibility. It's the oldest plot twist, right?
ahappyaccident: (Xena)

[personal profile] ahappyaccident 2020-05-09 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[ hm. ]

Better safe than sorry, I guess. Still, I'd rather have more evidence that they're here before we start assuming things like that.
