week two: trial

WEEK TWO: TRIAL

Morning dawns bright and early the day after the announcement of the dead, and as the sun tracks its way across the sky, the voice's message is likely not far from anyone's mind. Friends are still missing, people are still dead, and time is running out.

Finally, the sun reaches its highest point. A low, deep thrumming sound echoes throughout the entire island, which turns into ringing, a drawn-out signal that grows louder and louder until it seems as though all other sounds on the island fall to a hush.

It is then that the lighthouse beacon becomes illuminated, drawing them all to the southern beach. That same voice as before rings, audible throughout the entire island.

"There are those of you who hope to escape from this with clean hands...you may find yourselves successful. Will it be worth it? You are all participants in this game, and you will all be complicit in the sacrifices that take place here, or else you will not have earned your passage home. Twenty-four hours remain before the ritual must be completed, or you will all suffer the consequences. There is no consolation prize for less than eleven sacrifices.

You have until the sun vanishes beneath the horizon. Choose your next sacrifice, and choose who will dispatch them. Speak the names of your choices into the conch. Failure to cooperate will result in a fate worse than death.

...perhaps you should investigate the deaths. The bodies are out there, and the evidence as well... but you will have to find it yourselves.

...oh, and one more thing. There is a way to save yourselves...if you select the right sacrifice.

Tick-tock, tick-tock! Your time starts... now."

Once the entire group has gathered, the lighthouse's beacon flickers out.

It is time to choose the next sacrifice... and hopefully, to catch a killer.

OOC NOTES

Welcome to your last trial, everyone! This trial will take place from 9am PST/12pm EST/4am NZST, and will last until 6pm PST/9pm EST/1pm NZST.

There will be a one-hour trial break from 1pm PST/4pm EST/8am NZST to 2pm PST/5pm EST/9am NZST. We recommend that you use this time to get something to eat if you haven't yet already, play some Animal Crossing, or even just take a quick nap. During this time, no mod tags will go out; we also ask that players refrain from starting any intensive threads such as interrogations, strip searches, hair or injury comparisons, etc. While we're not going to say you're not allowed to tag during this time, we also don't want anyone to miss out on anything important during an official break.

Please remember to have your character cast a vote on the voting page! Voting is mandatory, as it functions as the activity check for the game. If you do not cast a vote by the time trial is over, your character will be killed off. Please contact the mods prior to the end of the trial if something comes up and you are prevented from voting (i.e. 504 errors, etc).

I'm not sure, but I have wondered about the tally marks found in the caverns. There were tally marks on the altar deep within, too. I don't have a certain conclusion for what those meant.

There were also tallies on the rocks where Master Anaido was said to have been found.

I believe Anaido-san was the one who made those.

That would certainly be the most likely explanation. Do you think he had seen the tallies in other places and was attempting to recreate them?

I'm not sure. Perhaps you can catch him tonight and ask him yourself. I don't know him well enough to say.

I'm afraid I don't follow. I thought Master Anaido had been killed?

[Threepio, uh, still believes that they're hologram messages or recordings of some kind]

He shows up as a ghost now.

I suppose it's possible. Master Luke mentioned such encounters, given the right conditions.

[He doesn't know why he'd be able to see them, though!]

I... didn't really count the marks on the altar, did you? Should we split up to check?

No. The altar also shook like something or someone was inside it. If we can, it should be looked at again

[ Whether or not it'll actually give them any answers is another question, but. ]

Maybe we can break it open.

But I worry about any ramifications that may have. You remember the crab, don't you?

Well, maybe we'll use it as a last resort then.

I do agree with you. I don't like it, and if we can destroy it without that happening to either of us, we should.

[ pauses. looks in C-3PO's direction appraisingly. ]

Didn't C-3PO-san say his crystal could cause explosions...? I wonder if it can be used more than once.

Please ask him if it can, and if he says yes, if you can use it.

[Threepio overhears his name and shuffles over]

What was it that you needed to use, Miss Minako?

[ oh hewwo, who put him back together? was it Minako secretly? :D ]

Ah, you mentioned earlier that the crystal you have can cause explosions. I was wondering if it can be used to make another one? If we run out of avenues to pursue, I was considering blowing up this creepy altar in the caverns.

[Let's say it was Minako while the two of them listened to everyone!]

Oh my! That sounds quite dangerous.

Master Luke told me when constructing his lightsaber that the Kyber crystal regulates and focuses energy, but I believe there is a separate power source providing that energy. They are certainly not meant to explode. It'd be quite inconvenient for the person holding it, I imagine.

[ it was meditative, like peeling clementines, or knitting a scarf. yeah, that was it ]

Um... is that a "no"...? Or a "it needs a new energy source before it can explode again"?

[Minako: turns on Threepio once, earns advanced robotics skill]

The latter, I believe.

If I may ask, are you attempting to 'blow up this creepy altar' in order to open it?

Yup! When a live crab got on it, it reacted pretty violently - like there was something inside it! And then it killed the crab.

[ poor crab... ]

I feel like that's pretty good grounds to be biased against it? And given there's a malevolent overseer of some kind, maybe it's connected to the altar somehow.

[ or maybe the altar is the only thing holding it back ]
