week one: trial
WEEK ONE: TRIAL
Morning dawns bright and early the day after the announcement of the dead, and as the sun tracks its way across the sky, the voice's message is likely not far from anyone's mind. The fire in the ruins still burns, though as the minutes tick by into hours, the flames slowly begin to subside.
Finally, the sun reaches its highest point just as the flames in the ruins sputter out. A low, deep thrumming sound echoes throughout the entire island, which turns into ringing, a drawn-out signal that grows louder and louder until it seems as though all other sounds on the island fall to a hush.
It is then that the lighthouse beacon becomes illuminated, drawing them all to the southern beach. That same voice as before rings, audible throughout the entire island.
Once the entire group has gathered, the lighthouse's beacon flickers out.
It is time to choose the next sacrifice... and hopefully, to catch a killer.
Good luck.

"There are those of you who hope to escape from this with clean hands... well, I suggest you discard those hopes. You are all participants in this game, and you will all be complicit in the sacrifices that take place here, or else you will not have earned your passage home.
You have until the sun vanishes beneath the horizon. Choose your next sacrifice, and choose who will dispatch them. Speak the names of your choices into the conch. Failure to cooperate will result in a fate worse than death.
...perhaps you should investigate the deaths. Would it ease your conscience to condemn someone to death whose hands are already stained with the blood of a sacrifice? The bodies are out there, and the evidence as well... but you will have to find it yourselves.
Tick-tock, tick-tock! Your time starts... now."
Once the entire group has gathered, the lighthouse's beacon flickers out.
It is time to choose the next sacrifice... and hopefully, to catch a killer.
Good luck.
OOC NOTES
Welcome to your first trial, everyone! This trial will take place from 9am PST/12pm EST/4am NZST, and will last until 6pm PST/9pm EST/1pm NZST.
There will be a one-hour trial break from 1pm PST/4pm EST/8am NZST to 2pm PST/5pm EST/9am NZST. We recommend that you use this time to get something to eat if you haven't yet already, play some Animal Crossing, or even just take a quick nap. During this time, no mod tags will go out; we also ask that players refrain from starting any intensive threads such as interrogations, strip searches, hair or injury comparisons, etc. While we're not going to say you're not allowed to tag during this time, we also don't want anyone to miss out on anything important during an official break.
Please remember to have your character cast a vote on the voting page! Voting is mandatory, as it functions as the activity check for the game. If you do not cast a vote by the time trial is over, your character will be killed off. Please contact the mods prior to the end of the trial if something comes up and you are prevented from voting (i.e. 504 errors, etc).
If you have any questions, please go ahead and ask! Your mods and fellow players are always here to help. And most of all... have fun!

what an useless place to look, but that's a weird thing to notice. he's not one to make the conjecture of what it would mean for the ash to be so thin in a singular place compared to everything else. maybe someone else can point it out?
but he'll add to the conversation, finally: ]
I was here the other day when I found bandages. [ he wander over towards akane and help her with the door if needed. ] I gave them to Kocho since it would be better in her care. I came back again the night it caught on fire to see anything but nothing looked like this.
[ clearly he missed all of this somehow and that's starting to bug him. did all of this really start and finish on the same night???? ]
no subject
[He isn't the one with the braincell either! He stands back up and motions for the two of them to go join Akane maybe.]
Yeah? At least you got something helpful. I mean, I guess being clean is helpful, too... [He glances up.] Yo! You found anything? Be careful going in there--wait for us, dude!
no subject
See these spots? [She'll point to them.] The layer of dust suggests that something was moved recently, and with the size it's safe to say they're bottles. If we apply that same idea to the ash you both found....how big would you say the space is? What could have been laying on it that was then moved?
[...she suspects but. Let's not. Say that.] Where were the two of you that night?
no subject
the bottles that are missing come from shelves that mainly have cleaning supplies and such on them, though the ones that are on the shelves are pretty mild as far as the supplies go. there is the occasional shelf that differs, though - for example, a shelf with nail polish has a few empty spaces, but no nail polish remover.
hm! wonder what that means.]
flayn is now mod.
that said— ]
I was not in this room.
[ helpful, i know. ]
The room where I dug through had plenty of bugs in it.
[ he does not recommend going to that room under any circumstances. is there anything else that is noteworthy? he'll leave akane to the room now that she's in there safety. he'll be looking around for anything that would catch his eye.
...anything that looks disturbed? ]
britt is valid
[finally i am Modern and know things]
It looked like a spa or something. Right? When Kanroji and me woke up, we were in these old, nasty bathrobes--like the ones you get at a spa. So I guess what's missing is something like that?
[HM! He looks all along the shelves.]
Well, if it's... uh, murder, wouldn't they look for stuff to help them get rid of evidence?
no subject
[If there's nothing else obvious on the shelves, she'll return to the main room where the fire was and do another sweep. Since the door was rammed into, she'll check the walls and other doors as well.]
no subject
Akane won't see any signs of forced entry on the other doors, but as they go ahead, there's... definitely some signs of a scuffle in the not-so-burnt areas. There are scattered footprints here, but they're impossible to get a size on, as they overlap each other and are dragged in some places. One wall seems to have crumbled to dust despite the lack of fire in this area, and another has several cracks radiating out from a central location, as if something collided with it quite heavily.
Also, there is something else on the ground - a set of chains.]
no subject
If it were a perfect murder then I wouldn't be here.
[ since, you know, he was here the night of the murder and everything. it doesn't add up he frowns at the idea of products that make it easier to make fire being used in this manner. they totally could have used that for better things.
and if he's allowed to also notice the cracked wall, he's going to wander over that way and note the chains as he does. hello?? sure it's not ideal to touch evidence but he's going to pick up the chains nevertheless and examine them. ]
no subject
[AAAA he hobbles after them quickly. Don't leave him behind, wah.] Holy shit, dude, look at the wall! [He'll check out the crumbled one if Akane wants to check out the cracked one.
Does he see anything behind it?]
It looks like there was some kinda fight. There's footprints dragged all over.
no subject
It also looks as if someone maybe slammed into the wall itself. It must have been really heavy to cause this much damage. [But...she'll glance at the chains as Giyuu picks those up.] ...are those...?
[...would she recognize them as belonging someone in particular?]
i solved my computer problem so the mod account is back
...strangely, though - the chains don't look like they should have been able to come off. They are completely solid, without a latch to unlock the shackles from where they were attached to their owner. Curiouser and curiouser!
The crumbled wall is pretty badly damaged - something must have hit it pretty hard to demolish it so thoroughly. Unfortunately, there isn't much else to see there aside from the debris.
The cracked one was also hit hard, but... perhaps not as hard as the demolished wall. Looking closely, though...
There is a strand of long dark hair stuck in one of the cracks.
But there doesn't seem to be anything else to find in the ruins.]
\o/
Chains. Do they look familiar to anyone? [ presenting chains to them. ] It doesn't look as aged as everything else that has been found.
no subject
Ryuji also did not officially meet Wen Ning, I hate that. TEEJ PLEASE.] Damn, something hit it really hard... Who can even do that? It's as big as a body. [He turns around at the noise, shifting with Akane to Giyuu.]
Chains? Was someone locked up? Did someone have chains on them...?
no subject
...and with the way the ash was spread, and the size of the area you found...the conclusion should be obvious, shouldn't it? [Please. Please tell her you understand, guys.] We should head back to everyone else if there's nothing left for us to see.
