week one: trial

WEEK ONE: TRIAL
Morning dawns bright and early the day after the announcement of the dead, and as the sun tracks its way across the sky, the voice's message is likely not far from anyone's mind. The fire in the ruins still burns, though as the minutes tick by into hours, the flames slowly begin to subside.

Finally, the sun reaches its highest point just as the flames in the ruins sputter out. A low, deep thrumming sound echoes throughout the entire island, which turns into ringing, a drawn-out signal that grows louder and louder until it seems as though all other sounds on the island fall to a hush.

It is then that the lighthouse beacon becomes illuminated, drawing them all to the southern beach. That same voice as before rings, audible throughout the entire island.

"There are those of you who hope to escape from this with clean hands... well, I suggest you discard those hopes. You are all participants in this game, and you will all be complicit in the sacrifices that take place here, or else you will not have earned your passage home.

You have until the sun vanishes beneath the horizon. Choose your next sacrifice, and choose who will dispatch them. Speak the names of your choices into the conch. Failure to cooperate will result in a fate worse than death.

...perhaps you should investigate the deaths. Would it ease your conscience to condemn someone to death whose hands are already stained with the blood of a sacrifice? The bodies are out there, and the evidence as well... but you will have to find it yourselves.

Tick-tock, tick-tock! Your time starts... now."

Once the entire group has gathered, the lighthouse's beacon flickers out.

It is time to choose the next sacrifice... and hopefully, to catch a killer.

Good luck.

OOC NOTES
Welcome to your first trial, everyone! This trial will take place from 9am PST/12pm EST/4am NZST, and will last until 6pm PST/9pm EST/1pm NZST.

There will be a one-hour trial break from 1pm PST/4pm EST/8am NZST to 2pm PST/5pm EST/9am NZST. We recommend that you use this time to get something to eat if you haven't yet already, play some Animal Crossing, or even just take a quick nap. During this time, no mod tags will go out; we also ask that players refrain from starting any intensive threads such as interrogations, strip searches, hair or injury comparisons, etc. While we're not going to say you're not allowed to tag during this time, we also don't want anyone to miss out on anything important during an official break.

Please remember to have your character cast a vote on the voting page! Voting is mandatory, as it functions as the activity check for the game. If you do not cast a vote by the time trial is over, your character will be killed off. Please contact the mods prior to the end of the trial if something comes up and you are prevented from voting (i.e. 504 errors, etc).

If you have any questions, please go ahead and ask! Your mods and fellow players are always here to help. And most of all... have fun!

[Hm...]

I suppose it makes the most sense, doesn't it? And I can help check others who want a little privacy. I don't mind if someone else checks me.

Your help would be appreciated, Kurashiki-san. If no one else comes to check you, I will come back.
paradoxity: (4.)

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course. [Off she go.]

[ hello... ]

Has anyone checked you yet?
paradoxity: (2.)

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
No, not yet. But I'm ready whenever you are...I did check someone else though. [And she seems to be lingering on a thought here.]

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes? What is it?

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-03 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
When I checked Zoe's hands--[She nods toward Zoe]--they were a bit scuffed up. Her feet as well, but with those shoes it makes sense. I asked anyway...she said she, Neena, and "Mr. Rainbow" were playing at the lighthouse the other day, and that she and Neena climbed and fell. Mr. Rainbow caught both of them though.

[She tilts her head then.] When we first met, Anaido didn't know his own name. But Mr. Rainbow is one of the names he offered to me. I asked if they had played together after that and she said no, but...it's something to consider, given his hands.

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that is something to think about.

[ She nods. ]

Thank you, Kurashiki-san. I will still ask to check you now.
paradoxity: (7.)

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course. [And given Akane is..Akane, she only moves out of the way for the modesty of other people. The belt's undone and a small voodoo doll that was strapped into it falls to the sand, and she'll remove the sweater-dress and her tights. The only things that stay on are a black watch-like bracelet and a diamond ring. Other than the usual wear and tear one would get from sleeping in a tent for a week, she looks pretty clear. No injuries here.]

[ a voodoo doll.... ]

Thank you for your cooperation.
paradoxity: (1.)

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
[Stop leave jumpy-doll alone it's fine.]

Of course. If there's anything else I can do, I'll do my best. [Time to get dressed again god why is there a sweater dress on a tropical island, fuck.]

[personal profile] fishingforcompliments 2020-05-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
[Hmm.]

Well... his injuries are consistent with having fallen from some height, are they not? It would be unsurprising to see scuffs on his hands if they are indeed from climbing. There is not much else of a sufficient height to fall from in the area in which he was found.

...how are Neena's hands?
paradoxity: (2.)

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
They are. I haven't checked her hands. But I think Shinobu checked her?
fishingforcompliments: (008)

[personal profile] fishingforcompliments 2020-05-03 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
If her hands have the same sort of scuffs as Zoe's, then we can assume the scuffs are evidence that they climbed the lighthouse at the same time.

If, however, they look different...

[Well.]
paradoxity: (9.)

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
...those were my thoughts, too. All we can do is compare them to Anaido's, yes?
fishingforcompliments: (014)

[personal profile] fishingforcompliments 2020-05-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm... if all three of them are identical, then all it is is proof that they all climbed the lighthouse at some point.

But differences may help us determine when the lighthouse was climbed. It is possible to track the age of a recovering wound that way, as well, though admittedly I am more well-versed in healing magic than in medicine.

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-05-03 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I will ask both of them to come with me to Anaido-san's body.
paradoxity: (1.)

[personal profile] paradoxity 2020-05-03 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you, Shinobu.
