week one: trial
WEEK ONE: TRIAL
Morning dawns bright and early the day after the announcement of the dead, and as the sun tracks its way across the sky, the voice's message is likely not far from anyone's mind. The fire in the ruins still burns, though as the minutes tick by into hours, the flames slowly begin to subside.
Finally, the sun reaches its highest point just as the flames in the ruins sputter out. A low, deep thrumming sound echoes throughout the entire island, which turns into ringing, a drawn-out signal that grows louder and louder until it seems as though all other sounds on the island fall to a hush.
It is then that the lighthouse beacon becomes illuminated, drawing them all to the southern beach. That same voice as before rings, audible throughout the entire island.
Once the entire group has gathered, the lighthouse's beacon flickers out.
It is time to choose the next sacrifice... and hopefully, to catch a killer.
Good luck.

"There are those of you who hope to escape from this with clean hands... well, I suggest you discard those hopes. You are all participants in this game, and you will all be complicit in the sacrifices that take place here, or else you will not have earned your passage home.
You have until the sun vanishes beneath the horizon. Choose your next sacrifice, and choose who will dispatch them. Speak the names of your choices into the conch. Failure to cooperate will result in a fate worse than death.
...perhaps you should investigate the deaths. Would it ease your conscience to condemn someone to death whose hands are already stained with the blood of a sacrifice? The bodies are out there, and the evidence as well... but you will have to find it yourselves.
Tick-tock, tick-tock! Your time starts... now."
Once the entire group has gathered, the lighthouse's beacon flickers out.
It is time to choose the next sacrifice... and hopefully, to catch a killer.
Good luck.
OOC NOTES
Welcome to your first trial, everyone! This trial will take place from 9am PST/12pm EST/4am NZST, and will last until 6pm PST/9pm EST/1pm NZST.
There will be a one-hour trial break from 1pm PST/4pm EST/8am NZST to 2pm PST/5pm EST/9am NZST. We recommend that you use this time to get something to eat if you haven't yet already, play some Animal Crossing, or even just take a quick nap. During this time, no mod tags will go out; we also ask that players refrain from starting any intensive threads such as interrogations, strip searches, hair or injury comparisons, etc. While we're not going to say you're not allowed to tag during this time, we also don't want anyone to miss out on anything important during an official break.
Please remember to have your character cast a vote on the voting page! Voting is mandatory, as it functions as the activity check for the game. If you do not cast a vote by the time trial is over, your character will be killed off. Please contact the mods prior to the end of the trial if something comes up and you are prevented from voting (i.e. 504 errors, etc).
If you have any questions, please go ahead and ask! Your mods and fellow players are always here to help. And most of all... have fun!

A pouch, and a ribbon.
Other than that, there's nothing around them but the walls and ceiling of the cavern.]
no subject
he'll pick up the pouch, with careful hands, and peek inside. there's not an eyeball in here is there. ]
no subject
If there is nothing else around besides those two items, she will pick the ribbon up to inspect it. What does it look like? She talked to basically everyone on day one and two, and caught the ones she missed later... Would the ribbon look familiar to her at all?]
no subject
The pouch and the ribbon were just hanging out near the end of the rope. It doesn't look like they were placed with any particular amount of care or dropped in any particular hurry; they're just there.
The ribbon itself looks pretty old. It doesn't look like anything that anyone arrived here wearing.]
no subject
...Lady Kasane. [ turning the bag towards her, gently, to see inside the bag, giving it a small roll in his palm so the contents move a tiny bit to catch any light. ]
no subject
Those are... ashes?
[Uh. How big is that pouch, and what does it look like besides having ashes inside? Actually, do the ashes have any particular smell while they're taking a closer look?
She lifts the ribbon up for him to see, as well.]
Do you recognize this?
no subject
...and blood. i have just been informed that the ashes smell like ash and blood. hm!]
no subject
[ maybe it was something wen ning had on his person, for some reason...?
either way. the smell behind the ashes hits a second later, fire and iron. his nose wrinkles behind his mask, but it's not an overall unfamiliar scent.
nnnnnnn...... ] Young master Wen is from a place quite similar to myself. To any being who may become a ghost, their ashes are their last tie to this world. Destroying them would kill the spirit and prevent it from reincarnating.
.....If these are from his belongings, they must be important. And, if they're...
[ ....the ruins were on fire, weren't they? ] ...if they're his, they're quite important as well.
no subject
[She looks so, so very sad now that she knows the lore, though. She sniffs at the smell of the ashes, double checking the pouch and the area they found it in for any sign that they might have spilled over. Is this all there is to find in the cavern? Anything wrong with the rope itself, or...? Hm.]
But if this is all that's left of his personal belongings... we should bury them once this is over. He deserves that much.
no subject
[ he's sad too, don't worry!! the lore is the worst.
after a moment, he nods, very carefully closing the pouch again to keep everything together. he remains looking down at it as kasane wraps up, and there's a twinge to his voice when he speaks again. yin yu's pretty clearly affected. ] ....if it would be alright, I'd like to take the ashes with me as they are. I don't mind allowing the others to investigate first, of course, but....
My master is Hua Chengzhu of the Ghost City. It's a place where many ghosts thrive between reincarnations. A safe place. I...when we spoke, I invited him to visit, when this was over, and he asked after his sister, as if she had passed as well. [ he thumbs the closure, carefully. ] ....I'd like to fulfill my promise, as intended.
no subject
It was just gone...? I don't think we made the others empty their pockets, when Kocho-san and the rest were searching for injuries.
[Which, hm. Might have been an oversight.
She sighs, though.]
As long as they're treated with respect, I... I don't mind. I just wish we could have given his body a proper burial.
